Haltom City announced the death of Mayor An Truong on Friday afternoon. Truong, who became the first Vietnamese American mayor in Tarrant County when he was elected in 2019, was 78.

The city said in a news release that Truong died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.

Truong began his career with the Fort Worth Police Department and spent 37 years as an investigator with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. He also served on the Haltom City Council before being elected mayor.

”Mayor Truong was a dedicated public servant who always put his community first,” City Manager Rex Phelps said in a statement. “On behalf of the City Council and City staff, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

In Truong’s honor, flags at Haltom City facilities will be lowered to half-staff.

Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare also remembered Truong as a trailblazer and longtime public servant.

“Today we mourn the loss of Haltom City Mayor An Truong, a trailblazer whose service left a lasting mark on our community,” O’Hare said in a statement. “From his arrival in the United States as a young man seeking opportunity, through decades of work in law enforcement and his eventual leadership of Haltom City, Mayor Truong embodied the values of hard work, public service, and quiet determination. My prayers are with his family.”
