Mail-in ballots stolen from Daly City post office

The U.S. Postal Service is investigating after vote-by-mail ballots for San Mateo County were stolen from a Daly City post office, the county’s Registration & Elections Division said Thursday.

The Elections Division said it was notified Wednesday of the mail theft that reportedly included mail-in ballots. The number of ballots that were stolen is still unknown.

The county is working with USPS to investigate.

Voters who are concerned that their ballots may have been affected by the theft may request a replacement ballot online or in person at any vote center in the county.

Online requests for a replacement ballot must be submitted by Oct. 27 to allow sufficient time for mailing.

Voters are encouraged to look up the status of their mail-in ballots through the California Secretary of State’s free ballot tracking service, “Where’s My Ballot.” The platform notifies voters when their ballot is mailed, received, and processed by the county elections division.

There are currently three vote centers open in the county. Additional centers will open on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 31, bringing the total to 50 vote centers. For a list of vote centers and ballot drop off locations, go to smcacre.gov.

Voters with questions about their ballot status can contact the elections division at registrar@smcacre.gov or 650-312-5222.
