(KRON) -- A 22-year-old Tesla driver drove through a traffic diversion set up on Interstate 80 in Fairfield Tuesday night as authorities investigated a fatal crash and collided with a California Highway Patrol vehicle, according to law enforcement.

CHP was on the eastbound lanes of I-80 responding to a major crash just west of Air Base Parkway. The initial collision occurred around 10:45 p.m. and involved a 19-year-old San Pablo man who lost control of his 2007 Honda Civic and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe, authorities said. The teenager was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

At 11:46 p.m., while investigators remained on scene and five of six lanes of eastbound I-80 were shut down, a Tesla being driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man “drove through the flare and cone pattern and struck the CHP vehicle,” CHP said.

Two CHP officers who were inside the patrol car were hospitalized for their injuries. They have since been discharged from the hospital, according to authorities.

CHP said it is unknown at this time whether the Tesla had its Full Self-Driving feature active at the time of the crash. The investigation into both crashes remains ongoing.
