In 2016, America was gripped by one of the strangest scares in recent memory: reports of sinister clowns lurking in wooded areas, stalking neighborhoods and frightening children. What began with a handful of sightings in South Carolina quickly spiraled into a nationwide frenzy, triggering police investigations, school lockdowns and widespread panic.
Now, ten years later, Hulu is revisiting the bizarre phenomenon in its new documentary, “Clown Panic,” premiering today, October 12, just in time for Halloween. Don’t remember? No worries, Hulu will be sure to refresh your memory…
The story begins in a small South Carolina community, where children reported seeing mysterious clowns hiding in the woods. Initially dismissed by some as an urban legend, the sightings soon spread across the country, fueling fear, speculation and a social media frenzy.
Before long, police departments were investigating reports, schools were implementing lockdowns and videos of supposed clown encounters were circulating online.
But how much of the panic was based on genuine threats, and how much was fueled by rumors and the internet?
Directed by Academy Award-nominated and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Ed Perkins, “Clown Panic” examines how fear can spread through communities and how social media can transform isolated incidents into a nationwide phenomenon.
The film features archival footage, viral videos and interviews with witnesses, law enforcement officials, professional clowns and cultural commentators.
Produced by Lightbox’s Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn, the documentary promises a mix of unsettling revelations, dark humor and a closer look at the psychology behind mass hysteria.
And with Halloween just weeks away, the timing couldn’t be more fitting.
“Clown Panic” is streaming beginning today, October 12, on Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ for U.S. bundle subscribers and Disney+ internationally.
